It is said that any habit whether good or bad starts with a psychological pattern called a ‘habit loop.’ This loop in initiated through an innocent trigger which holds a reward in the end. The part of our brain which is involved in this is basal ganglia. The trigger makes up our mind to go into an automatic mode and the reward comes in the shape of satisfaction of that task.
And before we know it that simple habit can create a rippling effect to invite more bad habits and an endless cycle is formed. The first step is to acknowledge your bad habits and know them as they are. These are some habits to say goodbye to all at once because their rippling effect can resonate in our whole life.
Surfing impulsively on social media
Whether it is Facebook or YouTube, they all work on a delayed reward. It is a continuous cycle which is started as an innocent crime but then it becomes a habit and u can’t escape it. At first, they show you something related to your interest, the algorithm is inbuilt in them which reads and analyze your profile it, to present you what you will feed on. Once you get into this flow, it is really hard to quit it.
So, it is necessary to quit surfing impulsively.
Saying ‘Yes’ to everything
Self-control is the highest form of discipline. Most of the time we say ‘yes’ to things out of reverence. We think about what others might say when we should have valued our priorities. It is necessary to value your commitments before indulging yourself in unnecessary commitments.
So, learn to say no to things and prevent yourself from over commitment.
Keeping toxic people close
There are some people in your life which have a toxic effect in their existence. They will demoralize you and belittle your instincts. It is necessary to keep these people as far as possible because they can hurt you mentally. Even thinking about them will drain you completely. You should instead think about people who have created a positive effect on your life.
So, stop sacrificing your time for such people.
Getting multiple notifications
Quite often, we turn on every possible notification on our mobile. As if we are running a state and our delayed response can create havoc. Using multiple notifications will won’t let your mind rest because you will be alarmed every time your phone rings a beep.
So, designate a specific time to check all your notifications on your mobile. This will spare you a lot of time and will also create a productive day for you.
Procrastinate to achieve a goal
Many people wait to act only when they are sure that they will succeed. Otherwise, they don’t even try. They sit idle with blank pages and a dream to write on it. They procrastinate to start it because of doubts and low confidence. We freeze and get nervous in the beginning because the first step is the hardest to take.
There are two basic tactics to overcome a bad habit,
- Choose a substitute for your bad habit.
- Cut out as many triggers as possible.
