The luxurious life of the Royal Family in Thailand is basically unheard of. With Great Britain in the top spot, there are many other Royal families all over the world enjoying this privilege. One such example is Thailand’s Royal Family. The family has been holding the throne for several decades and the public simply adores them.
Thailand is a Southeast Asian country. The country with a population of nearly 70 million is known for tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha.
The country’s capital Bangkok is an ultramodern cityscape which rises next to quiet canalside communities and the iconic temples. It is known worldwide as one of the most buzzing cities in the world. Thailand has been the kingdom of Chakri family for almost two and a half centuries now.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej, also known as the Rama IX, died in October 2016. He was the longest reigning monarch in history as well as the longest reigning leader of a country. He ruled for 70 years and was very much loved by his public.
He played a vital role in shaping his country, as have generations of his family since taking to the throne in 1782. In addition to King Bhumibol, today we take a look at some other prominent members of the Royal family of Thailand.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej married Queen Sirikit in a Bangkok palace on April 28, 1950, a week before his coronation. She was always seen by her husband’s side but has retreated from public life in recent years due to ill health.
Sirikit’s portrait adorns roadsides across the kingdom and people celebrate Mother’s Day on her birthday. The king and queen had four children. Their only son ascended to the throne after the demise of King Bhumibol.
The King Bhumibol successor to the throne his only son, Vajiralongkorn was born on July 28, 1952. He studied in UK and Australia before embarking on a military career.
Officially married three times, Thai King has had quite a colorful personal life. He married his first wife in 1977, a cousin, Princess Soamsavali Kitiyakara, with whom he has a daughter. They later divorced.
He married the Thai actress Sujarinee Vivacharawongse in 1994 but divorced her a couple of years later. In 2001 he married a woman who became known as Princess Srirasmi in a private ceremony. She gave birth to a boy, Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, on April 29, 2005.
In late 2014, Srirasmi suffered a very public fall from grace when several members of her family were arrested as part of a police corruption probe and charged with lese majeste law. King Vajiralongkorn later divorced her and she lost her royal titles. The 66-year-old King has been blessed with many children.
His nation admires him but he is yet to draw the same level of public devotion as his revered father.
The other very significant member of the Thai Royal Family is Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana. The princess of Thailand is the only daughter of King Vajiralongkorn and his former consort Sujarinee Vivacharawongse. She was born in 1987 and is the youngest of five children born to the ruling King and his second wife.
The princess has four brothers. All four of them migrated to the United States with their mother and do not have royal titles. Princess Sirivanavari has interests in sports and fashion. She represented Thailand in badminton and equestrian events at regional sports competitions.
Not only good in sports but she has also studied fashion and textiles at the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at the prestigious Chulalongkorn University and studied couture at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.
She has shown catwalk collections in Paris and Bangkok and has her own fashion clothing line “Sirivannavari.” She is a regular at the Paris Fashion Week. The recently concluded contest of Miss Universe also featured her collections. It’s safe to say that she has made a name for herself in the fashion industry.
