The world is indeed unfair for the ones who are born with financial troubles and big dreams. Whatever they want to achieve, comes with a lot of sacrifices. Such is the story of a 19-year-old Indian athlete, Poonam Sonune, who ran in a marathon to pay for her sister’s wedding.
The life of athletes is not easy in India as they don’t get many opportunities or sponsors to prove themselves but Poonam stood up against every odd and did something so inspiring that will win everyone’s heart.
Poonam ran in the 2018 South Asian Junior Athletics and won the gold medal in the 3000m race. She also brought home a handsome cash prize of 1.25 lakh which were spent on her sister’s wedding. This win changed Poonam’s life overall as her loved ones started believing in her athlete abilities and supported her dreams.
Her family belongs to Sagwan village in Buldhana district and her father works as an agricultural laborer to bear all the expense of their house. He did help Poonam financially in the beginning when she was known for her athletic skills in the school but her life got tough when her father’s responsibilities increased with time.
So, looking at her skills, the school decided to send her to Nasik where coach, Vijendrasingh then played a significant role in her success. She was not only trained under Mr. Vijendrasingh but he also took the additional responsibility of raising money for her training and nutritional requirements by keeping up with corporate-social responsibility (CSR).
The extensive training programme went on for a long time without any interruption until Sonune saw the opportunity of participating in Pune Half-Marathon. She jumped on to it knowing that by winning the marathon she would be able to organize some money for her sister’s wedding on her father’s behalf and also gain their confidence in order to pursue her dreams.
And when you run with such passion and desire combined with an aim, success was bound to happen.
However, it didn’t go as perfectly as it happens in other success stories. Poonam couldn’t attend her sister’s wedding because when she got to know about her selection in the upcoming South Asian Games, the wedding dates clashed with it, which were already finalized.
It was indeed a beautiful moment for both the sisters as one was getting married while the other was looking forward to making her dreams happen on the same day.
Poonam now aims to win more marathons and save up more money from it to build a house for her family in the future.
