The King of Dubai

Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum has ruled over the region since the death of his elder brother in 2006. In addition to his title as King of the United Arab Emirates, he is also the Vice-President and the Minister of Defense. Clearly, the Royals don’t like distributing the power.

However public opinion seems mostly favorable. And the Sheikh has done a lot to achieve that. From building infrastructure to set up schools he has undoubtedly played a huge role in bringing Dubai to the status it is at today. Despite having billions of dollars to their name these royals make it a point to actively interact with their citizens and give back to the country.

Social Media

One way they choose to communicate with their citizens is through social media. Unlike the British Royal Family who is encumbered by hundreds of rules and forbidden from being on social media the Dubai Royals embrace technology. You can follow the daily schedules of the family through their Instagram.

For example in 2018 the Sheikh’s daughter announced the birth of her son to the world on her Instagram. The Sheikh himself keeps an Instagram account where he updates his millions of followers on his daily meetings regarding matters of national importance and allows his citizens a peek into his life. That’s right! Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum regularly posts pictures of his children and family like any ordinary citizen might.

Controversy

That’s all good and well but is the royal family of Dubai really everything they appear to be? In 2018 video surfaced of Princess Latifa al Maktoum daughter of the King. Forbidden from keeping a passport, driving or leaving the country the princess fled the controlling clutches of her family. Preceding this attempt in her 30s she had also attempted fleeing as a teenager. The Princess boarded a yacht to India hoping to seek asylum in the United States but was caught. She has not been heard from since. We all know social media is filled with lies and deceit. So how far you choose to believe the Royal Family of Dubai is up to you.
