These days traveling long distance generally involves airplanes. And inspires either joy or immense hatred in people. Of course, a lot of that has to do with how you’re traveling. An economy class seat on the back of the plane will likely leave you feeling cramped and uncomfortable.

Emirates Tweets Image of ‘Bling’ 777

In fact, the airline wowed the internet when they posted this picture on their official Twitter account. And captioned it the ‘Bling’ 777 aircraft. The tweet went viral with hundreds of people chiming in and joining the conversation. The plane was seemingly covered in diamonds, sparkling as it stood in the hanger. Naturally people were intrigued. But the popular question remained, was this a real plane?

Real or Hoax?

Emirates airlines posted the tweet on December 10. And it received more than 20,000 likes within hours of posting. The internet was in a frenzy with comments pouring in. Is the plane real? Is it operational? How much do tickets cost? Where does it fly to? Hundreds of people speculating and wondering, with some certainty that it was a hoax and others convinced Emirates had actually built a diamond-encrusted plane.

Others didn’t think it was a good idea. One user thought the expense of the flamboyant design was a waste of money. While another had questions regarding the aerodynamics of the plane and wondered whether passengers would be safe. Eventually, Emirates had to clarify that the plane wasn’t real.

Artist Sara Shakeel – Original Crystal Artist

The “Bling 777” was actually a creation of graphic artist Sara Shakeel. The creator calls herself the ‘Original Crystal Artist’. Shakeel’s art revolves around editing real images to add a sparkly effect. And as can be seen from her Instagram page she’s really good at it!
