Without any doubt, Coca-Cola is the most beloved soft drink in the whole world. We see it all around us but yet many don’t know about the true story which gave the world this amazing drink. Over the time people have tried to spread so many rumors and myths about its origin that the real truth was lost somewhere.
So have you ever pondered upon how Coca-Cola was invented before you took a sip of it? If yes then you would be surprised to know that Coca-Cola was actually invented as a cure for morphine addiction by its creator.
John Pemberton was a licensed pharmacist and American Civil War veteran. He was born and brought up in Georgia but like most people, his life turned upside down when the country broke out on civil war. Pemberton decided to be a part of the war by fighting for Georgia State Guard, which was associated with the Confederate Army. He was serving as a lieutenant colonel and on April 16, 1865, during the last phases of the war, Pemberton got stabbed in the chest with a saber.
Later after the initial treatment where he was stitched up, his pain became severe to a level that he couldn’t control. For the sake of getting a quick recovery, he started to take Morphine which soon became his addiction.
In an effort to save himself from this habit, he used his experience of a pharmacist and with his knowledge of human body and medicine, he came up with a unique solution in the form of tonic. He took extracts of the coca plant, which eventually becomes the source of cocaine, and combined it with Kola nuts. As soon as he mixed it with his experiment, he knew he has developed something big.
He took the syrup in a jug to a local pharmacy for sampling. A lot of people liked the concoction and then he added carbonated water in the syrup with the help of drug store owner to create the perfect recipe.
Initially, they began to sell it as ‘brain tonic’ which had medicinal value. But when it got into the market, it was being sold as soda fountain drink at five cents a glass. Upon seeing its popularity all around, an advertising expert Frank Mason Robinson gave its name Coca-Cola, which was made after combining the name of the ingredients used in the same drink.
But Pemberton, on the other hand, remained addicted to morphine. Coca-Cola couldn’t serve as an alternative and since his addiction was expensive, he was inching toward bankruptcy. So in order to save his family and himself, Pemberton began to sell the rights of his formula and shares of his company.
Pemberton also never wanted to give away all of it because he knew the future of this drink. Instead, he wanted his son, Charley Pemberton to take the responsibility of the company.
The deal was people could use Pemberton’s formula but not the name. However, Charley was in a hurry to get huge bucks. So, in 1888, Charley sold the remaining ownership to a business Tycoon Asa Candler. In August of the same year, John died of stomach cancer and his addiction to Morphine. Whereas since Charley was also addicted to alcohol and opium, so six years later he also passed away.
Meanwhile, Asa Candler brought Coca-Cola up as a corporation and it is his efforts in selling that made Coca-Cola the most successful soft drink company in the whole world.
Now you can drink Coca-Cola with all the right facts and figures.
