John Pemberton was a licensed pharmacist and American Civil War veteran. He was born and brought up in Georgia but like most people, his life turned upside down when the country broke out on civil war. Pemberton decided to be a part of the war by fighting for Georgia State Guard, which was associated with the Confederate Army. He was serving as a lieutenant colonel and on April 16, 1865, during the last phases of the war, Pemberton got stabbed in the chest with a saber.

In an effort to save himself from this habit, he used his experience of a pharmacist and with his knowledge of human body and medicine, he came up with a unique solution in the form of tonic. He took extracts of the coca plant, which eventually becomes the source of cocaine, and combined it with Kola nuts. Initially, they began to sell it as ‘brain tonic’ which had medicinal value. But when it got into the market, it was being sold as soda fountain drink at five cents a glass. Upon seeing its popularity all around, an advertising expert Frank Mason Robinson gave its name Coca-Cola, which was made after combining the name of the ingredients used in the same drink.

But Pemberton, on the other hand, remained addicted to morphine. Coca-Cola couldn’t serve as an alternative and since his addiction was expensive, he was inching toward bankruptcy. So in order to save his family and himself, Pemberton began to sell the rights of his formula and shares of his company.
