Are you stressed? Do you worry about your career? Or falling into debt? Most people do. And Sashee Chandran has the solution.
The 32-year-old founded her company ‘Tea Drops’ in an effort to modernize an age-old remedy.
What are Tea Drops?
Chandran’s products consist of varieties of tea leaves, spices and other herbal remedies blended into a single drop. And this drop is simply added to a cup of hot water. So millenials can enjoy all the benefits of tea without the hassle of brewing.
Tea Drops are available in 1600 stores all over the US, for example, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. And with creative flavors such as ‘cardamom spice’ and ‘blueberry acai white tea’ they are quickly becoming a hit. An 8 drop box can be purchased for $12.
As her products gain popularity her business has begun to interest investors. In May, fashion entrepreneur Tory Burch invested over $100,000 in the company. Then in June Accel Foods worked to collect a high $1.9 million for the company through seed funding. The business has come a long way since Sashee Chandran first started her company in 2015.
How did Sashee Chandran start Tea Drops?
Chandran started with nothing more than a vision and the willingness to hustle for her dream. She drew a line of credit on her home to self-fund her business. But that was just the beginning. From crafting complex blends and writing patent applications to packaging and labeling, she did everything herself. It took months of 15 hour work days before the business started seeing any profits.
Sashee Chandran’s inspiration
Between her Chinese mother and Sri Lankan father – brewed tea was a tradition in Chandran’s household. And she associates childhood memories of comfort and relaxation with the act of drinking tea. For her being sick means chrysanthemum tea and family gatherings mean black tea with nutmeg. And she’d carried on those traditions to her own life. But eventually, she began finding it harder and harder to brew tea in between her busy work days. Because loose tea involves steeping and straining and at least 20 minutes of production. And that’s when the idea came to her.
