Out of all the reality television shows out there Toddlers and Tiaras is definitely the most adorable. And the cutest child contestant on the show to date has definitely been Alana Thompson, otherwise known as Honey Boo Boo. From the moment she appeared on the screen, the audiences were glued.
With her sharp wit, amusing conversations and quirky family, the 6-year-old thrived in the limelight. Each episode showed new and entertaining gems. Like when her mother “Mama June” made her some “Go Go Juice” as preparation for a pageant walk. The juice actually turned out to be a combination Red Bull and Mountain Dew leaving audiences shocked, surprised and slightly outraged. But viewers tuned in by the thousands, every week, to watch her just the same.
Spin off: Here Comes Honey Boo Boo
In fact, the show even ended up creating a spin off titled ‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’ revolving solely around Alana which ran from 2012 to 2014. The audiences were now introduced to her family. And with outrageous characters like her mother “Mama June”, father “Sugar Bear”, sisters “Chickadee”, Chubbs”, and “Pumpkin” people were hooked.
Canceling the Show
Eventually, public opinion shifted with people claiming the producers were blatantly exploiting the family. But ratings kept going up and the show kept playing. Things continued to worsen as the show continued. In June 2014, Honey Boo Boo’s parents filed for divorce owing mostly to differences stemming from the show itself. And soon thereafter her mother “Mama June” started dating another man.
But it soon came to light that Mama June’s new partner happened to be former convict Mark Anthony McDaniel Sr. who had been arrested for assaulting a child and was a registered sex offender. This changed everything and what had earlier been a game was amusing no longer. With massive public disapproval from their audiences, the network was under massive pressure to shut down the show.
Then the situation turned dire. Information emerged stating that the ex-convict’s victim had actually been Honey Boo Boo’s sister “Chickadee”. Now there was no going back. The show was immediately discontinued and no further episodes were ever put out.
So the question now is: What happened to Honey Boo Boo?
Honey Boo Boo on The Doctors
After the cancellation of her show, Honey Boo Boo stopped competing in pageants. And the next time audiences saw her was on the show “The Doctors”. This was a health-oriented show that staged interventions. Here Alana, her mother and the audiences were told that Alana was, in fact, obese considering her age, height and weight.
Discussing the health concerns and possible illnesses associated with obesity Dr. Travis Scott informed Alana how her diet was loaded with unhealthy sugars and preservatives. And insistent viewers urged Mama June monitor her daughter’s diet and exercise regimen to save her from contracting serious illnesses.
Honey Boo Boo’s Music Career
Following this Alana attempted pursuing a career in the music industry. And released a song called “Movin Up” featuring Adam Barta. But the song flopped. No one wanted to hear Alana sing or watch her family act in a music video.
Reports about the family now told a somber story. Mama June and her daughters were not getting along. And Chickadee, in particular, had a strained relationship with her mother. Having lost their reality show, with no other apparent prospects, the future seemed glum. But then their luck turned.
Mama June: From Not to Hot
Mama June and Sugar Bear were soon seen on the television show ‘Marriage Boot Camp’. And following that Mama June came out with her own show called ‘Mama June: From Not to Hot’ chronicling her amazing weight loss journey.
Going from 460 to 160 pounds she talked about wanting to be an inspiration for her daughters. Audiences also saw Alana losing some weight with her mother. And the two eventually even competed on a pageant together.
Recently, Honey Boo Boo appeared on Dancing With the Stars.
